Apple’s OLED iPad mini Starts at ₹82,900; Pre-orders Oct 28

Apple’s new 8.5-inch OLED iPad mini starts at ₹82,900 in India. Pre-orders open October 28, but the premium price, 60Hz screen and English-only Siri AI are worth knowing.

Apple has redesigned the iPad mini around an 8.5-inch OLED screen and its A20 Pro chip, bringing a major display and performance upgrade to its smallest tablet. In India, the new model starts at ₹82,900 for Wi-Fi and ₹1,00,900 for Wi-Fi + Cellular. Pre-orders open at 10:40 pm IST on Wednesday, October 28, with retail availability from November 6.

The headline upgrade is not just a faster processor. The new mini adds IP67-rated water and dust resistance, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, a landscape-positioned 12MP Center Stage front camera and Apple’s latest iPadOS 27 software. But buyers should note two important trade-offs: the tablet remains a 60Hz display device, and Apple lists its new Siri AI as available in English—not Hindi—at launch.

iPad mini (A20 Pro): India price and availability

Apple’s India store lists the following starting prices for the new iPad mini. All prices are in Indian rupees and may change if Apple revises its store offers.

Configuration Price in India
128GB, Wi-Fi ₹82,900
256GB, Wi-Fi ₹94,900
256GB, Wi-Fi, nano-texture glass ₹1,06,900
512GB, Wi-Fi ₹1,18,900
512GB, Wi-Fi, nano-texture glass ₹1,30,900
128GB, Wi-Fi + Cellular ₹1,00,900
256GB, Wi-Fi + Cellular ₹1,12,900
256GB, Wi-Fi + Cellular, nano-texture glass ₹1,24,900
512GB, Wi-Fi + Cellular ₹1,36,900
512GB, Wi-Fi + Cellular, nano-texture glass ₹1,48,900

The official Apple India store listing confirms that pre-orders begin at 10:40 pm IST on October 28 and that availability starts November 6. Apple also advertises education pricing from ₹76,900. The new TechWoven Smart Folio costs ₹8,500, while Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) are sold separately at ₹11,900 and ₹7,900 respectively.

OLED arrives on the compact iPad

The screen grows from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches while the tablet retains roughly the same footprint, thanks to bezels that Apple says are 24% thinner. Its Super Retina XDR OLED panel offers pixel-level lighting control for deeper blacks and higher contrast, with peak brightness up to 1,200 nits and a minimum brightness of one nit. A nano-texture glass option is available on the 256GB and 512GB configurations for buyers who want reduced glare in bright environments.

Apple has also made the enclosure thinner and lighter: the new mini is 5.4mm thick, and the company says it is 13% lighter than the previous model. It carries an IP67 rating, meaning it was tested under controlled conditions for protection against dust and temporary immersion in water. That is not a promise of permanent waterproofing; Apple warns that resistance can decline with wear and that liquid damage is not covered by the standard warranty.

There is one display compromise to know about. Despite the OLED upgrade, the new mini does not support Apple’s ProMotion high-refresh-rate technology. The Verge’s report and its reading of Apple’s technical specifications say the screen tops out at 60Hz. That is fine for reading, video and most drawing, but it is less fluid than 120Hz displays on higher-end tablets and phones.

A20 Pro brings faster graphics and on-device AI

The iPad mini is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro, manufactured on a 2-nanometre process. Apple claims up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times the graphics performance and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance than the previous generation. Those are Apple’s own test comparisons, not independent benchmark results, so real-world gains will vary by app and workload.

The configuration matters more than the “A20 Pro” name alone suggests. The 128GB and 256GB models have a five-core CPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The 512GB version upgrades to a six-core CPU and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says doubles peak compute power for on-device AI. Buyers choosing the base model for its price should not assume it has the same neural-processing configuration as the top storage tier.

The tablet supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple has added an Acoustic Display audio system with woofers coupled through the display and tweeters built into the enclosure. The 12MP front camera now sits on the landscape edge and supports Center Stage, making video calls more natural when the tablet is held horizontally. The rear 12MP camera supports 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second.

Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and cellular upgrades

Apple’s N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support. Cellular models use the company’s C2 modem, which Apple says can deliver up to 50% faster cellular data speeds than the previous mini. The cellular models use eSIM, so buyers should check that their preferred Indian operator and plan support the required activation method before paying extra for mobile connectivity.

Siri AI has an important India-language caveat

The new mini ships with iPadOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence features, including the next generation of Siri. However, Apple’s India product page currently says Siri AI is available in English. Hindi is not listed as a supported Siri AI language on that page. The software is also described as being in beta, and some features may vary by region, language and usage limits.

That matters for Indian buyers who expect a fully local-language assistant simply because the tablet is sold in India. The hardware can run on-device AI workloads, but the usefulness of any specific AI feature depends on software availability and language support—not just the chip. Apple’s launch announcement describes its new personal-context and on-screen-awareness capabilities, while its language and availability notes set the practical limits users should check before buying.

Is the new iPad mini worth its price?

The OLED screen, improved brightness, water and dust resistance, A20 Pro, Wi-Fi 7 and compact 5.4mm design make this a substantial update for people who specifically want a small premium tablet. It could suit readers, travellers, students who annotate notes, field workers and creators who value portability more than a laptop-sized display.

The price is the harder question. At ₹82,900, the entry model is firmly in premium-tablet territory, and the Apple Pencil or keyboard-style cover adds to the total. Buyers who mainly stream video, browse, read PDFs or take occasional notes may not use the chip’s additional AI and graphics headroom enough to justify the premium. Those who need a larger canvas, a 120Hz screen or more room for split-screen work should compare the iPad Air and other large-screen tablets before choosing the mini.

For existing iPad mini owners, the strongest reasons to upgrade are the OLED display, lighter body, IP67 rating and new connectivity. The decision is less compelling if the current tablet already handles everyday work well and the main attraction is Siri AI: its English-only availability and beta status are real limitations to weigh today. With pre-orders opening October 28 and sales beginning November 6, Indian buyers have a short window to compare configurations and decide whether the screen and portability improvements justify the cost.
