Apple is pushing its most affordable open-ear earbuds deeper into the AI era. The new AirPods 5 bring Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to both models, along with hands-free Siri AI, Live Translation and a redesigned acoustic system. In India, pricing starts at ₹14,900, with the upgraded wireless-charging version priced at ₹17,900.
Apple announced the AirPods 5 on September 9, with pre-orders opening the same day and retail availability scheduled for September 18. The launch matters because Apple is adding features that were previously associated with its more expensive audio products while keeping the familiar open-ear design.
ANC Comes to Apple’s Open-Ear Design
The biggest hardware change is Active Noise Cancellation. Apple says the new AirPods 5 can remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, using a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio. The company says the system is designed to work without sealing the ear canal, preserving the open-ear feel while reducing surrounding noise.
That is an interesting engineering trade-off. Traditional in-ear earbuds can create a physical seal that helps block outside sound before electronic noise cancellation even begins. AirPods 5 instead have to use microphones, signal processing and speaker output to counter external noise while leaving the ear relatively open.
Apple is also retaining Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio, which dynamically balances noise cancellation and awareness of surrounding sounds. Conversation Awareness can lower media volume when the wearer starts speaking.
Two Models, One Major Difference
The standard AirPods 5 cost ₹14,900 in India. A second version, called AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, costs ₹17,900.
The more expensive model adds a wireless charging case, support for Apple Watch and Qi chargers, and a force sensor that allows users to swipe on the stem to adjust volume. Apple says it can deliver up to five hours of listening with ANC enabled on a single charge, compared with up to four hours for the standard model. With its case, the upgraded version can reach up to 22 hours of listening with ANC.
The pricing is notable because the standard AirPods 5 are positioned as Apple’s entry point for ANC rather than as a stripped-down product that requires buyers to move up to the Pro range.
AirPods Become an AI Interface
The other major shift is software. With a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled device, AirPods 5 can provide hands-free access to Siri AI. Apple says users can ask Siri to act on information from messages, emails and other personal context, rather than treating the earbuds as a simple playback accessory.
Users can also interact with Siri using head gestures. Nodding can confirm an interaction while shaking the head can reject one, allowing some commands to be handled without touching the phone.
That makes the AirPods 5 part of a larger change in Apple’s product strategy: AI is increasingly becoming an interface layer connecting phones, earbuds, watches and other devices. The earbuds do not need to contain a full general-purpose AI system themselves. Instead, they act as a low-friction sensor, microphone and audio interface for intelligence running across Apple’s hardware and services.
Live Translation Could Matter More in India
Live Translation is another feature with particular relevance for a market as linguistically diverse as India. Apple says compatible AirPods can deliver translated conversations to the listener when paired with a supported Apple Intelligence device and the latest software and firmware.
The feature is not universally available in every language or region, however. Apple says availability depends on the supported device, language, region and software configuration. Siri AI is initially rolling out in beta in English, with additional languages planned for October.
That limitation is important for Indian buyers. The hardware may be available nationwide, but AI features can have a different rollout depending on language support and Apple’s regional policies. Buyers should therefore treat the advertised AI capabilities as software-dependent rather than assuming every feature works identically on day one.
India Price and Availability
Apple has set the starting price at ₹14,900 for AirPods 5 and ₹17,900 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Pre-orders began on September 9, while retail availability starts September 18.
Apple’s Indian pricing makes the AirPods 5 significantly more accessible than the company’s flagship audio products, although they still occupy the premium end of India’s wireless-earbud market. The more important question for Indian buyers will be whether open-ear ANC is effective enough to justify the premium over conventional earbuds that use an in-ear seal.
For the confirmed Indian pricing, launch date and feature availability, Apple’s India newsroom announcement provides the primary specifications. Indian coverage from The Times of India also confirms the ₹14,900 starting price and September 18 retail date.
What Apple Is Really Testing
The AirPods 5 are more than a routine specification refresh. Apple is testing whether users want AI features to disappear into everyday hardware rather than exist as a separate chatbot or app.
ANC makes the earbuds better at the basic job of listening. Siri AI makes them a hands-free computing interface. Live Translation pushes them further toward being a real-time communication tool. Together, those features show how Apple’s wearable strategy is evolving around context, voice and personal intelligence.
The open-ear design remains the biggest question mark. Apple can improve computational noise cancellation, but it cannot completely change the physics of an earbud that does not create the same seal as an in-ear model. The real-world test will be how convincing the combination of ANC, sound quality and awareness feels in places such as Mumbai trains, Bengaluru traffic or a crowded airport.
The Bottom Line
AirPods 5 bring a surprisingly large set of upgrades to Apple’s lower-priced open-ear earbuds. ANC is now standard across both models, while the higher-end version adds wireless charging, longer ANC battery life and stem-based volume control.
More importantly, Siri AI and Live Translation turn the earbuds into a more active part of Apple’s computing ecosystem. At ₹14,900, the AirPods 5 could become one of the company’s more interesting tests of whether AI-powered wearables can move beyond convenience features and become an everyday interface.
