MediaTek Brings 2nm Chips to Android Flagships

MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro is its first 2nm flagship smartphone chip, combining Arm C2 cores, dual NPUs, LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 for faster on-device AI.

MediaTek is pushing smartphone silicon into a new manufacturing era with the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first flagship mobile processor built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Announced on September 15, the chip combines a new all-big-core CPU design with dual NPUs, LPDDR6 memory support and UFS 5.0 storage.

The launch matters beyond benchmark numbers. The shift to 2nm is arriving as smartphone makers increasingly move AI workloads from the cloud onto the device itself. MediaTek says the Dimensity 9600 Pro is designed around a native AI architecture that coordinates the CPU, GPU, NPU and image processor rather than treating on-device AI as a separate accelerator.

MediaTek’s official specifications describe the processor as a first-wave 2nm smartphone design, with the NPU 1090 handling demanding generative and agentic AI workloads while a separate efficient NPU domain is intended for always-on tasks.

Why 2nm Matters for Phones

A smaller process node does not automatically make a phone faster, but it can improve the amount of performance a chip can deliver within a fixed power and thermal budget. That matters in smartphones, where the processor has to share a thin chassis with a battery, cameras and other radios.

MediaTek is using TSMC’s N2P process for the Dimensity 9600 Pro. Reuters reported that the company is positioning the chip to compete more aggressively in the premium smartphone market as flagship hardware costs continue to rise.

The practical goal is not simply a higher peak score. Better efficiency can give manufacturers more room for sustained gaming, computational photography and local AI without increasing heat or battery drain at the same rate.

An All-Big-Core CPU Takes Center Stage

The Dimensity 9600 Pro uses a 2+3+3 CPU layout built entirely around Arm’s latest high-performance C2 cores. It includes two C2-Ultra cores reaching up to 4.55GHz, three C2-Pro cores at up to 4.35GHz and three more C2-Pro cores running at up to 3.1GHz.

MediaTek claims up to 17% higher single-core performance and 15% higher multi-core performance than the previous Dimensity 9500, while saying multi-core power consumption can fall by as much as 61% at comparable peak performance. Those are vendor claims, so independent retail-device testing will be needed to determine how the numbers translate to real phones.

The chip also supports LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage. That combination should help reduce bottlenecks around data movement, particularly when large AI models, games and high-resolution media are competing for memory bandwidth.

AI Is the Bigger Story

The most important change may be the move toward more capable on-device AI. MediaTek says its NPU 1090 delivers 51% faster LLM prefill performance than the previous generation and supports mixture-of-experts models with up to 30 billion parameters on the device.

That does not mean a future phone will run every 30-billion-parameter model at full speed locally. Memory capacity, model quantisation, thermals and software optimisation will still determine what users actually experience. But the hardware direction is clear: more AI processing is being designed to happen without sending every request to a remote server.

The chip also introduces a second, lower-power NPU domain for background and always-on workloads. MediaTek says this can keep AI agents and sensor-driven functions active with less impact on battery life.

Gaming and Cameras Get the Same Silicon Upgrade

MediaTek is pairing the CPU and AI changes with its Mali-G2 Ultra NX GPU and Imagiq 1290 imaging processor. The company claims up to 27% higher peak GPU performance and up to 24% lower power consumption at comparable output, along with support for up to 185 frames per second in supported workloads.

For cameras, the platform supports advanced computational photography and up to 4K240 slow-motion capture. MediaTek also highlights H.266 hardware decoding, which can reduce the energy cost of handling next-generation video streams compared with relying on software decoding.

What It Means for Android Flagships

Reuters reported that the Dimensity 9600 Pro is expected to appear in upcoming premium smartphones from Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. The first devices are expected to arrive in the current quarter, putting the chip into direct competition with the latest flagship silicon from Qualcomm and other premium mobile platforms.

That competition is increasingly about more than CPU speed. Phone makers are now differentiating on local generative AI, AI photography, gaming performance, battery endurance and how much processing can happen privately on the handset.

For Android buyers in India, this could eventually matter in two ways. First, MediaTek has a long-established presence across the Indian smartphone market, so its flagship technology can influence devices across a wide range of manufacturers. Second, improvements that begin in premium phones tend to filter into cheaper chip families over time.

The 2nm Race Is Becoming an AI Race

MediaTek’s launch also shows how the semiconductor race is changing. The headline process node is important, but the competitive advantage increasingly comes from how efficiently the entire system moves data between CPU, GPU, NPU, memory and storage.

That is why the Dimensity 9600 Pro’s combination of 2nm manufacturing, LPDDR6, UFS 5.0 and a dual-NPU architecture is more significant than any single specification. If manufacturers can translate those capabilities into useful local AI features without excessive heat or battery drain, the smartphone itself becomes a more capable computing platform.

MediaTek is therefore betting on a future in which the flagship phone is not merely a faster communication device, but a small AI computer that can reason, generate, see and respond locally. The next test will come when the first commercial phones put those claims in consumers’ hands.
